I paint the landscape as both a physical place and a point of departure—moving between observation, memory and abstraction.

Observation

My work began with looking — being in the landscape, seeing light and color. This is the experience of painting directly from place.

Place and Journey

Interpretation

Gradually, depiction gave way to memory, material and a less literal response to the subject.

Finding Place

The newer work is less about describing the landscape and more about exploring what it means to find our place within it.

Finding My Place in the Landscape

For many years, landscape painting meant looking carefully and responding to what was in front of me. Gradually, the questions changed. I became less interested in depicting a landscape and more interested in understanding my relationship to it.
